Things We Love: Natural Hair Barbie
penned by ashley jewell
As a child, Barbie was definitely one of my favorite toys (second only to my beloved Lego's ). I would spend countless hours pampering and pruning my doll's hair, clipping and cutting, washing in the bathtub, and setting it on foam sponge rollers to get those curls poppin! Once, I even tried curling one of my Barbie's hair using my Mother's curling iron, which unfortunately for Barbie melted all of her hair, and even more unfortunately for my Mom, led to her later trying to curl her own hair and ending up with a gob of melted plastic enmeshed in it. Sorry Mom!
But, I digress. The point of this post is not to brag about what an awesome kid I was, but rather to talk about the amazing things that some folks are doing with Barbie's hair these days. Using pipe cleaners, hot water and a few customized techniques, Barbie is getting a serious makeover, and her once straight tresses are being transformed in kinky curly, dread-locked and fro'd out loveliness!

This chick is doing some amazing things with ordinary straight haired dolls, turning them into natural haired divas. I love this! Unfortunately, I was forced into Barbie hair styling retirement after the curling iron incident, but you can believe that one of these dolls is on my Christmas list!
